The Dress Seeker in Nairobi
Natalie wearing a Nguo Affordable original in front of the painting “Becoming Oneself”
Many have commented on the lovely dress that I was recently featured in. Allow me to share the experience of shopping for dresses in Nairobi. You know all about my love for travel. Firstly, shopping is a community event. We went directly to Nguo Affordable which is located in Nairobi CBD (central business district.) We were greeted and immediately, my friend Jane Waithera and I began selecting dress options. We have differing approaches to selecting prints. I quickly surrendered to simply allowing Jane to make choices while I began trying on the ones I liked.
As I emerged in the initial wrap dress, women were quick to offer their opinions about how attractive I looked. An employee adjusted the dress, showing me how to pull one side tight against my body and only then to close the dress and tightly tie the sash. I lost count of how many items I tried on.
Secondly, the one dress everyone vetoed, was in a print of browns and reds which did not suit me. I received a litany of “oh no madam, this one is not good for you.” I was reminded of group shopping with my girl cousins and our mothers. Equally heartwarming, funny, and brutally honest.
Thirdly, one of the aspects of being in Kenya that I absolutely love is how women embrace color regardless of their age. I am a fan of color and I hope this never changes.
Lastly came the negotiating of price. While I have become better at haggling, I knew I was far out of my league and stepped back so Jane could advocate on my behalf. I emerged with a new wardrobe.
Here are just a few of my favorites. The dress featured with the painting Becoming Oneself is my absolute favorite. I especially love the print, colors as well as the neckline. This was my initial wearing as I knew I needed to have a special occasion in mind. What better an occasion than the unveiling of the painting?
